Preventing the Aging Diseases

Detox & bodily toxins

In today’s world we are exposed to toxins daily — in our food, water, air, personal care products and household environment. It is important to understand that these chemicals have an additive effect on our bodies and brains.

We each have a limit as to what our body can accommodate. When this limit is exceeded, we can develop toxin-related illnesses. Supporting the body’s natural detoxification systems is one of the most important and overlooked aspects of healthy aging.

How your body detoxifies

The body has sophisticated built-in detoxification systems that work continuously. Understanding them helps us support rather than undermine them.

01

The liver

Your primary detoxification organ. The liver processes toxins through two phases — converting them into water-soluble compounds that can be excreted via bile, urine or sweat. It requires an abundance of B vitamins, magnesium, glutathione and amino acids to function optimally.

02

The kidneys

Filter approximately 200 litres of blood per day, removing waste products and toxins via urine. Adequate hydration is essential — without sufficient water, the kidneys cannot do their job.

03

The gut

A healthy gut lining and microbiome trap and eliminate toxins before they can be reabsorbed into the bloodstream. A leaky or inflamed gut allows toxins to recirculate — dramatically increasing the toxic load on the liver.

04

The lymphatic system

Collects and transports cellular waste, pathogens and toxins to be filtered and eliminated. Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system has no pump — it relies on movement, breathing and massage to keep flowing.

05

The skin

Sweating is a meaningful route of toxin elimination, particularly for heavy metals. Regular exercise and sauna use support this pathway.

How to support your detoxification pathways

You do not need extreme cleanses or expensive protocols. Consistent, daily habits are far more effective:

  • Drink at least 2 litres of clean, filtered water daily to support kidney and lymphatic function
  • Eat cruciferous vegetables — broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale — which activate the liver’s detox enzymes
  • Prioritise fibre — it binds toxins in the gut and carries them out via the bowel
  • Move your body daily — lymphatic flow depends on muscle contraction and deep breathing
  • Sweat regularly through exercise or sauna — particularly effective for heavy metal elimination
  • Sleep 7 to 9 hours — the glymphatic system, your brain’s waste clearance network, operates primarily during deep sleep
  • Reduce your toxic input — switch to natural personal care products, filter your drinking water, choose organic produce where possible
  • Support the liver with milk thistle, dandelion root, turmeric and adequate B vitamins
  • Avoid alcohol — it directly competes with the liver’s detoxification capacity
